Past Lives… Real or Hocus Pocus?

Like, have you even been around spirituality if you haven’t done some sort of past life regression? It almost seems like a rite of passage for belonging to the “spiritual community”. And how amazing is it that that so many people have had past lives where they were super famous, important, and influential? Not to mention rich and powerful, like royalty. Heck, even I have had those… apparently… So after years of contemplating this, listening to other’s recount their regressions, and even leading a few regressions myself, I still can’t help to sometimes call bullshit. So, here is My Strange View on Past Lives.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of books have been written on the topic – admittedly I haven’t read any of these, and if I did I would probably have answers that make this article pointless haha. There are cultures and religions who believe in past lives and reincarnation almost as the basis of their beliefs (and how they conduct themselves in this “lifetime” to ensure it is either the last or they have a better one next time). But still, I find it hard to believe that, from all the billions of souls that have walked this earth, so many are reincarnations of but a few. I remember in one of my very first past life regressions I saw that I was an important architect in Egypt (bet you’ve had a past life there too) and I was in charge of designing and overseeing the construction of important temples, some of which are still standing today. I got super excited! I started googling and “found my past life”, there, written in the history books. But am I really a reincarnation of Imhotep? Really? And then I heard of other people who were also reincarnations of Imhotep. And I was like… yeah no, something is not right.

I have also had multiple other regressions in which I was a normal, run-of-the-mill person. No one important, nothing that could be traced in the history books. Accounts of lives that gave me a lot of clarity on situations I were dealing with in my present-day life. I have even seen the interviews on TV with kids leading their parents back to the house and family of their previous life. Mind-blowing! I mean, how much more proof do we need? But yet, I am ever skeptical.

So it got me thinking. There has to be another explanation for this. Multiple people being reincarnations of the same person? Unfortunately, for the accounts of people remembering lives from just a few years ago and going back to their family, my human mind can still not get around. But for the rest, I could only come to two conclusions that make some sort of sense for myself: DNA and Archetypes.

The first theory, DNA memory, is a very illusive avenue to look into. There have been multiple studies in the field of science on whether or not DNA can store and pass on memories to following generations – some for it, but the majority against it. However, through discovery in my own spiritual journey, I believe that our DNA is informed by our ancestors, and we can activate our DNA to awaken the power of the generations that came before us, to assist us in our lives. Some theories talk about seven generations only, but my thoughts are, if the I carry the DNA of seven generations, surely the DNA also then, within it, carries its own seven generations, and so on. So in my view, it is infinite, and can therefor lead us back through time, right to the beginning, informing us in the present day – should we be able to awaken our DNA to that level.

So, when we go into regression, into that deep subconscious state, do we awaken our DNA, and so reveal the energy and memories of the people it belongs to? And then take our consciousness to the time of that person’s life and see it as our own? Does our subconscious mind perhaps go to the specific DNA trail that will lead us to an ancestral life that it knows we can learn from to help us heal or deal with our current situation? And through this network of DNA, that dates back to the beginning, and is connected to so many lineages that came before us, which means that so many of us more than likely share some sort of common ancestry, do we then connect at some point to a common ancestor in a past life? And that explains how more than one person can be an “incarnation” of the same past life?

Then my mind goes on to think, that maybe we aren’t seeing past lives at all; not our own, and not even the life of an ancestor. But, instead, our superconscious connects us to an archetypal energy that will help us deal with what we are going through, and shows us a lifetime of someone we can learn from. Someone who dealt with a similar situation or had wisdom to share that could assist us. Especially in cases where we experience “past lives” of important, powerful, spiritual people.

So, in this case, we are not reliving one of our own past lives, but we are viewing the life and circumstances of someone else, perhaps through accessing the Akashic Records, the infinite pool of history and wisdom, in this deep meditative state of the regression, that then teach us and help us find the answers or guidance for what we are dealing with. Much like studying the Jungian Archetypes and identifying which ones reflect in our lives to gain an understanding of our patterning.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? As long as we get what we need from that regression therapy, i.e. answers and guidance to help us understand ourselves better, heal, and grow. We should just not let it it be another source of feeding our spiritual egos of “I was this and that in a past life so I am amazing and special”. So even if it is hocus pocus, who says hocus pocus can’t be real? Besides, life is so much more interesting when we believe in magic!
